This is a poor choice for printing on Linux.  The unit is
very low priced because HP leaves out a lot of things.
In a way it is similar to a WinModem that depends on the
host computer to do a lot of the work that a normal, serial
modem does in the modem itself.  Same with the P1006,
on windows a separate program (or driver/dll) is installed
that uses the host cpu to do a lot of work that typically
is done by the cpu in the printer.

http://linuxprinting.org lists the printer a "mostly works"
and suggests the filter that Jay mentioned, foo2xqx.
