[Novalug] Digital Voice Recorder - Recommendations?

I'm interested in taking a digital voice recorder for making notes during
a trip. I'm looking for collective wisdom here after having read reviews
on Newegg and not finding a lot of satisfaction. The ones recommended miss
being USB 2 / PC-able, unbreakable, etc. The highest priced one flunked
because it breaks easily!

Recommendations based on your experience are sought, considering these
factors:

    Linux compatible
    USB 2
    physically robust & compact
    goodly amount of storage space
    good batt life
    date/time marker on recording (pipe dream?)
    cost
