FVWM2 is what I use on my own systems. Like you, I spent too many
nights and afternoons getting it to do what I want, and I haven't
wanted it to change.
In the mid 80s, after changing editors 4 or 5 times in a year, I
decided to stick with micro-Emacs. Small, portable, and has the functionality
I need. At this point, my fingers know memacs and I don't think about
how to get text to move on the screen, I think about what I need to
say, what problem my code is solving, etc.
Window managers are similar. I don't think "A right click will lower
this window", I think "I need to see what's under this", and the mouse
moves.
But I live on the computer and mouse/keyboard are like extensions to
my arms and fingers.
The systems I construct for less tech-savvy friends need to use a WM
that's supported by the distro writers. They need to be able to get
updates with a button click instead of "Find the Website, Download,
compile, remove old application & libs, install, rinse/lather/repeat".
The more I fight with Gnome, KDE, et al, the more I question that
decision and wonder if I should figure out how to make FVWM work with
the autoloader to bring up some fileselector when a CD-Rom is inserted.
Then I could give folks FVWM and ignore updates.
