I'm experimenting with 'noapic' and 'nolapic' to explore the results but
it appears as though this machine may not have an apic yet some code
still may want to make some apic calls. I'm happy to say I'm not the
only one with this problem so while my crashes aren't linked to my
specific hardware failing, it's still something I'd like to 1) clear up
for me and 2) report bugs to participate in Linux improving via quality
informtion getting back to developers..
Does anyone know how to identify if you HAVE a suitable apic chip? This
is a 2004 era Pentium-M single processor machine so it doesn't need some
of the features of an IOAPIC (which I believe were originally developed
for multiprocessor machines.) My HP Netbook actually has one because
it's Atom CPU is a multi-threaded design.
