There is only one piece of advice for using vi, that's DON'T.

vi is remarkable in that it actually appears to damage people's brains.
People who use vi, think that it is the epitome of usability, and then
they go on to develop the rest of the software you see on a linux
system. That's why linux sucks. =(

Good non-brain dammaging editors include nano and kwrite, both will do
everything you need. If you want to see how an editor should work, come
over to my place and I'll show you E for IBM PC-DOS 7.0. For reasons
that defy all common sense, it will STILL humiliate every other editor
in use today.
