There is no "bad."

However, if you have a RPM already downloaded, you want to use ...

  # yum localinstall (package)-(ver).(arch).rpm

It prevents any "dependency hell" as it uses YUM to search for any
dependencies, even for a package that is already downloaded and
local.

    I've been using -i only in cases where there is nothing 
already there to Update -- like adding Opera to a fresh install.
