Not only that, but there are programs that will seek out mirror sites 
and open multiple connections to them, downloading pieces from each, and 
put them all back together.

DAP from speedbit.com is one. DownloadThemAll (dta) is another.

BT is a nice idea In Theory, but any serious Free Software will have 
well-connected fast direct download sites.
