As a sort of novice person using Ubuntu I thought that apt and (synaptic
also) checked out dependencies.
Once you used the CD for the install you use synaptic to search out the
other programs you need and it gets them and the supporting
libraries. it also comes up and tells you which libraries it is going
to replace when it does updates.
that was my impression.
