I boot w/ the option
    noapic
as this solves a number of issues.

You will want to bring up the sound tool and make sure it is not muted 
and the different outputs are turned up
    Right-Click on speaker (top right corner) and Open Volume Control
    System -> Preferences -> Sound (for testing)
