Check disk.

I would
    mkdir OLD-CRUFT
    mv .k* .gn* OLD-CRUFT
    (look at . files that appear to be KDE specific or configuration and
    move them to a new subdirectory)
    logout
    log back in
    it should recreate all the KDE files and that might fix it

I have only had issues w/ KDE and Ubuntu. I install the KDE apps I want 
and run gnome as the WM and that works well enough
