Well, there is a userspace implementation of KVM that is so far a modified version of QEMU. There is also the kernel piece. So KVM really refers to a couple of things, the kernel piece, or the modified version of QEMU. There is also what Redhat is doing with KVM and libvirt, which I've not yet played with. Surely someone will chime in.
I use KVM a lot to run apps like Remedy which so far don't respond under Wine. I've also recently played with VirtualBox and am impressed.
