[Novalug] Is Google Chrome going to threaten Linux?

As I understand from

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome_OS

it is based on Linux and the Google Chrome browser, with something else 
dropped in to replace X.  The article also claims that Google intends to 
make their OS open source (for whatever that means).

My guess is they're going to have an up hill battle.  Microsoft owns a 
significant part of the user market because of all the applications that 
have been written for Windows (think QuickBooks, AutoCad, various coding 
and web development suites, office software, etc.).  Apple owns a smaller 
but also significant chunk of the market.  People buying new systems are 
likely to want their systems to be compatible with 
work/friends/relatives/etc.  To overcome all of that momentum, at a time 
when the market is weak and personal savings rates are higher than they 
have been in a long time, is a tall order.

I don't see this fracturing the Linux base *OR* threatening Microsoft.
