If you don't mind waiting around, a Pentium II with 192MB of RAM *can* run 
Ubuntu, though it's not anywhere near fast.  2001, you're probably looking at 
a Pentium III and about the same amount of RAM.  Don't try to run Firefox and 
OOo at the same time, and you should be ok ;)  

Personally, though, I'd put something lighter than GNOME on there.  Fluxbuntu 
may be the way to go.  I went with Debian + Enlightenment 17.  Did it 
manually, but there's a distro caled Elive that's that combination.
