Have you tried any other LiveCDs with it, Knoppix or DSL to see if they handle the resolution better?

Subject: [Novalug] Ubuntu Jaunty problem with screen resolution on old Compaq laptop

I have an old Compaq Presario 1800T Laptop that I want to give to a friend who is a teacher to use since she can't afford to buy a laptop and I am not using it.

Here are its details - upgraded the memory and hard drive:
Processor manufacturer: Intel
Processor model: Mobile Pentium III
Clock speed: 1 GHz
RAM installed: 256 MB
Hard drive size: 50 GB
Graphics processor: ATi Rage Mobility M128
Graphics RAM: 8 MB
Display diagonal size: 15 in
Display Display technology: color TFT
Maximum resolution: 1024x768 pixels
Dimensions (W x H x D): 26x3.25x30 cm
Weight: 3.54 kg

I tried putting Ubuntu Jaunty on it and I am having problems with the display.

When the flash screen comes up and Jaunty is loading the display is fine and appears to be 1024 x 768.

With the original install where I had not done anything to the display manager the display is 800 by 600 and there are no options for anything else in System>Preferences>ScreenResolution.

Also the display has a defect - a vertical line that appears to be a repeat of the pixels on the right side of the screen. This line is approximately 1/3 of the width of the screen in from the right.

I have done a lot of searching on the internet and have tried a couple of things that have not worked.

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg does not give you any display options in jaunty.

any suggestions?

my next step is to try to install a previous version of ubuntu such as intrepid. however it disturbs me that Canonical seems to have removed the ability to tweak the display in Jaunty. I am afraid that this could mean that Ubuntu could be excluded from older computers in the future.
