before you switch you can set Ubuntu up with multiple GUI versions and 
try them out.

To do this in Ubuntu you use the Synaptic package manager and type in 
KDE or GNOME or Icewm or Xfe or "window manger" and then install how 
ever many you want to experiment with. reboot, then when you get your 
boot screen one of the choices is "choose session" and you can try 
out different ones.

I spent entertaining hours at one time.
