Actually, for a completely useless lesson in historical minutia, "cat"
is short for "catenate", which means the same thing as "concatenate".
But since few people know the former word, and everyone knows the latter
one, just about everyone has edited their manuals, and it's rather
difficult to find the word catenate online anywhere.
However, those of us with the Dead Trees version of UNIX Manuals
remember it well.
One wonders if they had to dig up the obscure "catenate" to avoid
calling the command "con", which I hear is rather impolite in France.
