[Novalug] desktop hang ups

Off and  on I find that after I have left the computer sitting idle, the 
desk top starts to exhibit partial lock ups. I can close windows but they 
still appear in the panel where minimized window icons are shown.

I cannot reopen things from these icons.

The menus in the menu panel stop working

However if I have a terminal open I can continue to launch things from 
the command line.

The first time when I was desparate I just turned the computer off. I had 
not figured out about doing stuff with the command line or I did not have 
an open terminal.

I can still change to a command line screen with cntrl alt F1 or I can 
reboot from the command line.

It is in that state now. Here is what Top reports as active
