[Novalug] screen resolution for an LCD screen

Hi,

In trying to get my LCD screen to run at the best mode,
=680x1050, I installed an ATI Radeon HD 3450 card.
This doesn't solve the problem, unfortunately: it
still runs in 800x600 mode.

The videocard is there. To find it, I followed a
suggestion from the list:

sudo lshw > list-of-hardware

This gives

friendly

           configuration: driver=pcieport-driver
         *-display UNCLAIMED
              description: VGA compatible controller
              product: Mobilitiy Radeon HD 3450
              vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
              physical id: 0

capabilities: pm pciexpress msi vga_controller bus_master
cap_list
              configuration: latency=0
  (snip)

The only thing I see possibly wrong here is 'display UNCLAIMED'.

What could be another place to look for a problem? I did notice
that X uses /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe', which only contained
the resolution the monitor uses, viz., 800x600. I added the mode
that I want in the line 'Modes' (now, Modes "1680x1050" "800x600"),
but this didn't help: it actually made it worse, since now the
screen goes to 640x480.

Any insight you can offer is most welcome.

Nino
