[Novalug] screen resolution, continued

Igor,

following your lead I did apt-get install xresprobe and then
sudo ddcprobe, on the computer that runs Debian. 
I get what's in the message below. It says
that the videocard is a Matrox Graphics, and the monitor
is an Acer X243W. Note that this probe doesn't give the mode
that I know is preferred, namely 1680x1050, and that neither
'ctiming' nor 'dtiming' has these parameters either.

Then, I switch to an 22" Acer, and I get another file. The
card is the same, of course, but the screen info differs,
see further below. Neither screen works well, both have
the wrong setting. This is under Debian.

Then, I switch the 24" screen to the friendly (yes, yours) 
computer under Ubuntu. Now, things are set correctly and I
get a nice, crisp screen. But, the settings are still not
what I'd expect...

Any idea what's going on? I'm tempting to think that I
should overwrite Debian with Ubuntu, but I hate to do
that because I've installed all kinds of things over the
years and I hate to lose that.  

Any suggestions?
