[Novalug] Open source DVR's

How is the quality of the HD-PVR? It appears to be a pass-thru-like device. Does this mean I could potentially play a Blu-Ray movie from a PS3 on it and record it to disk for archive/transer later? It appears limited to 720p, but that's okay for me.

I'm not a big fan of ripping these days as all the protection schemes are a pain to deal with. If I could just "play to file" that would be great.

Thanks.
