[Novalug] Linux By The Numbers -- Linux market share, new servers

Hello List,

Now, I buy servers without an OS pre-installed. That was not always the case. In year past (when I still worked at NASA-Goddard 1985-2006) all non-super computers that were not SGI or Sun came with Microsoft products pre-installed (this was pre-anti-trust lawsuit). I threw the shrink-wrapped disks into the closet and re-formatted to install linux.

Who buys servers with *anything* installed? We've got a couple hundred
servres (last job was a couple thousand) -- all purchased bare metal.
Ended up running Linux, Solaris, Windows, FreeBSD... but none of those
were bought with the systems.
