The current stable distro number is 9.10.

Provided you max out the RAM, it should be adequate. You may have
better luck installing LXDE on top of a minimal install using the
server install disc.

One known gotcha: the sound driver needs to be loaded manually. I
provide a script in /usr/share/doc/alsa-utils/README.init.cs4236
(since 9.04) that will accomplish this procedure for you. You'll
probably want to drop it into /etc/rc.local (or, if necessary, use an
upstart job instead so you'll get audio at the graphical login
greeter).
