[Novalug] vi problem

I got Karmic installed at the installfest at GWU Wednesday night and am
having a few problems. Here's a bad one.

vi misbehaves. At the command line I do

  vi all-accounts

all-accounts comes up but editing is impossible. I can do ctrl-f to get
to where I want to be but when I do i to put myself in edit mode. But it
doesn't act write. A word beginning with i is supposed to appear (I'm
having a senior moment -- don't recall what it is) but I can't edit. The
only way to get out of the mess is to close the window.

Ideas welcome.
