So I assume this means that you go have moved the cursor to the desired
location and hit 'i' to insert?

I'm guessing that you intended to use the homophone 'right'? What does
happen? Have you tried hitting esc a couple times to verify that you
are in command mode before hitting 'i' again?

What is the 'mess'? Is there anything happening at all?
