I've used Gnucash in the past and was happy with it. I'd suggest trying
both to see what you think.

Debian, and by extension Ubuntu have a good way to search for software:

$ apt-cache search gnucash
gnucash - A personal finance tracking program
gnucash-common - A personal finance tracking program
gnucash-docs - Documentation for gnucash, a personal finance tracking
program
grisbi - Personal finance management program
homebank - Manage your personal accounts at home
homebank-data - Data files for homebank

$ sudo apt-get install gnucash

Depending on the version and configuration of vi, it may not show the status on the
bottom. People like me end up hitting ESC pretty often to make sure I
know what mode I'm in. Some prefer the simpler console editor "Nano", but if Gedit works, I
wouldn't worry.
