I'm in the dark about how to hook up a "booster" wifi antenna for use on
the road. Newegg has one that seems ideal but I don't understand how / if
I can hook it up to my laptop.

It's a HAWKING HA12W 2.4GHz Hi-Gain 12dBi Directional Window Antenna
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833995007

It appears that one would hook it to a wireless router?

The specs given are:
Mechanical Properties:
Connector: RP-SMA

Material Properties:
Color: Ivory
Dimensions: 12.9" x 3.1" x 0.9"
Weight: 0.5 lbs (excluding cables and mounts)

System Requirements:
One Wireless 2.4GHz 802.11b/g Device with a Removable External Antenna
Connector Type: Reverse SMA or Reverse TNC
Features
Features 2.4 GHz Frequency - Works with popular Wireless Standards
Reverse SMA Plug - Compatible with most Access Points/Adapters
TNC Adapter is included for Cisco & Linksys Routers
A 12dBi Directional Antenna - Ensures optimal coverage
Supports all network operation systems
Setup is quick and simple

Side note: I have used a Hawking booster that plugs-in via a USB port and
it gives a good signal boost but I'm looking for something more.

Thanks.
