[Novalug] music scanning/scoring software

Howdy folks,
  Got a question for the musically minded.  Any thoughts/suggestions on
software that can scan sheet music?
  I've got a copy of Finale Allegro (for both Mac and XP) that comes with
the SmartScore (if I remember correctly) scanning software.  I've been
trying to scan in some choral works (SATB/piano) and the results have
been...interesting.  It may entirely be EBCAK related, but I've had to
do some serious editting of the scanned images before SmartScore will
handle them correctly (such as adding the missing choral staves at the
start of a piece, or during an interlude).
  Any thoughts or suggestions on other software (regardless of OS, we've
XP, OS X, and multiple flavors of linux running)?
