Back up first. Last thing you want to do is lose the data - infected or not. Once antivirus software is installed, it will catch anything still infected when you copy it back on. The real way most people get viruses is by clicking on fake pop up messages..

Subject: [Novalug] [OT] Remote cleanup of Windows box

This is very off topic from a Linux group.... but many are more than
just multi-lingual..

Does anyone know of a reliable entity that performs a remote cleanup of
a possibly infected Windows XP box? I found numerous sites on the web
but finding one that can be trusted is ... difficult at best.

Background: My daughter is studying in Germany & her box appears to be
infected. I bought AVG Internet Security which found a number of
virus's & a rootkit. She ran things but is not sure it is truly clean.
I would like to get someone who "knows" what they are doing to help
clean up. Once that is done, I will pay for a remote backup service
(Carbonite works ok) for her data. I am not sure if she truly backed up
all her data yet .... after 5 years at VT, there's alot she does not
want to lose. Yes - we could back it up first ... I am hesitant about
doing so and relying on data which may re-infect the system at best or
be truly corrupted at worst.
