On defining scan frequencies:

I did it because my monitor wasn't running at the right resolution.
Somehow, the "plug'n play" didn't work, I have no idea why.
But, the solution was as I described, again I have no idea why.

Pray tell: why does "plug'n play" sometimes work, and other times not?
