final update on this:
turns out the problem was one of the 1TB WD drives. now that it is out
of the system, i've been up and running continuously for 3 days.
in case anyone is wondering, my final hdd config is: two 500 GB
partitions, one from each 1.5 TB drive, in a RAID-1 array. i store all
non-backed up data on this 500 GB partition. the remaining three 1 TB
partitions (one each on the two 1.5 TB drives, the third on the "good"
1TB drive) are all standalone filesystems, no RAID or LVM. these four
filesystems are named "1", "2", "3" and "4". i have a "storage"
directory in the same location as these 4 mounts, which contains
symlinks to all subdirs. to get to "photos", i simply go to
/mnt/fileserver/storage/photos instead of /mnt/fileserver/1/photos
so i can move photos anytime, then simply update one symlink, and all
shortcuts otherwise stay the same.
so far, i'm pleased with the new setup.
