I actually started doing kernel development (which can be seen as
a pro or a con depending on whom you ask :) as a side-effect of
reading LKML for the express purpose of keeping up with the changes
in kernel builds in early 2.6 kernels.
My main gripe is that distros should package installkernel scripts
that properly update initramfs, grub etc. I compile kernels so
frequently that using the distro machinery like make-kpkg is
overkill, but a simple script that makes "make install" do the right
thing would be very helpful. They aren't complicated but I usually
wind up having to write my own for lack of an existing one.
