I haven't been having any issues with Fedora/RHEL doing exactly that.
It updates the initrd and grub, including installing any and all the flavors of the
kernel installed (e.g., kernel and kernel-xen, kernel and kernel-pae, etc...).
Or do I misunderstand the comment here?
