Hybrids tend to have the most control systems and information to tap over
their CAN bus. They've always been that way, hence their popularity for this
type of thing.
Although GM and a few other manufacturers actually have very rich CANs
these days, even into their lower tier vehicles. It used to be only the Corvette
that had a HUD (and since the '90s), with an ever increasing amount of information
tie-in -- including full navigation, 3rd party MP3 (iPod), etc... (no offense, but
I've driven a Ford with the Microsoft whatever it is and it is broken and unreliable).
But now the '11 Camaro is getting it as an option as well. I wouldn't be surprised
if HUDs become options on all GM models by the end of the decade
I've seen some rather interesting C6 (Corvette '05+) CAN setups over the last couple
of years. E.g., the Corvette paddle shifting on the auto-trans "learns" one's
shifting quirks, and accomodates. People are regularly tapping to see what
they can expose and display out of their C6s.

P.S. He (or was it others?) dubbed the project "The Mac Prius". I
suggested that his next car mod be a Cadillac Fleetwood.
