[Novalug] Massive filesystem corruption.

Looks like my Athlon 800 (about exactly six months shy of it's tenth) is
starting to flake out. I noticed it wasn't serving so I went to boot it.
Grub was extremely slow loading then I got a message that the filesystem
was unrecoverable. Even worse, there was practically nothing in the /dev
filesystem that I could point a utility at! (in rescue mode).

It seems to be having trouble staying powered, I jiggled the components
a little and that seemed to help. The HD started operating at full speed
again. (my main desktop uses exactly the same model drive, only a few
months newer.)

I booted into the long disused BeOS partition to make sure it was still
intact, it still had all my e-mail from 2004 and the backups of my DOS
computer. But using it, I noticed something that blew me away! The thing
was SCREAMING FAST. I mean not just kinda fast, not just "responsive",
but screaming, pedal to the wall with nitros and shooting flames fast. I
mean it could hold it's own against XP on a Core 2 duo. I mean if you
clicked an e-mail, it would pop-up. It wouldn't be like click -- watch
the CPU meter go to 100% on one of the processors for a few seconds,
then a window comes up reading "loading message", and then a few more
seconds it would finish rendering, I mean in BeOS, if you click the
goddamned message, you would be reading it 750 MILLISECONDS later.

And this is on a machine 1/3rd as fast and with 1/10th as much memory as
the machine I struggle to use for basic tasks on a daily basis. =(

How can the linux community possibly defend this atrocity? I need to get
me a video camera so that I can document this on Youtube. The situation
will certainly not be helped by me moving to a much newer motherboard on
my main desktop because new computers are only marginally faster than
old computers on single-threaded tasks. (did I mention that BeOS was
pervasively multithreaded from the beginning???) Even a 50% reduction in
time on my linux machine would not even put it in the same league as my
BeOS machine.

I've been using this web browser for 15 years. Old Netscape 4.08 on
Windows 3.11 could walk rings around Seamonkey while whistling a tune on
a CPU from that era while seamonkey labors at god knows what for minutes
on end at 100% CPU load on a very modern machine... =(

This is an outrage. =|
The free software movement will not make any further progress until it
realizes that it can't program and stop pushing the language of the
month and get re-acquainted with sound software design methodologies.
