[Novalug] HD backup applications

I realize that a number of you will tell me just to use rsync but the
internal workings of rsync are still a bit obscure to me and so far the
online tutorials I have found are just beginner tutorials.

I have a 90 GB home/bdz partition and I have a partition on a second
harddrive which is the same size (actually I have 5 of these on the
500gb hd.

My backup strategy has been to just copy /home/bdz to one of the
partitions on the 500gb drive. but I want to do things more efficiently so
I have been trying out some suggested bckup things like rdiff and
rsync.

well I did not know how to keep rsync confined to one partition so i
ended up letting it run for 10 hours and filling up the 500gb partition.

sbackup which comes with ubuntu jaunty seems to work ok if it backs up to
the default directory in /var but /var is not large enough for the backup.
when i try to send the backup to /media/WD500_05 the backup fails even
though the backup directory is created on that partition.

looking through synaptic I find many backup programs
bacula
backupninja
backuppc
cedar-backup and cedar-backup2
storebackup
faubackup
afbackup-common
keep

etc

I would like one that tells you when the backup fails (this is a
deficiency of sbackup), lets you exclude directories and files of certain
types and can be set to NOT follow links to other partitions

or if someone can help me configure a script for rsync I am happy to try
it again.
