I believe Santa Cruz Operation (later SCO of lawsuit notoriety)
did the actual port of UNIX V7, possibly under contract to M$.
This was around 1979/80 and was for the 8086.  SCO also served
as the support arm for M$'s Xenix.  For several years M$ annually
sold over 50% of all UNIX licenses.  My guess is that is also the
time frame when MS-DOS and/or Windows picked up a hierarchical
directory structure, the wrongly directed slash, pipes, and
redirection.
