But I am trying to build a computer anyway. and of course it's not going
well.

I turn the power on, the fans turn, the lights blink but no video - and I
have tried three video cards (all of them work in other computers).

All suggestions are welcome, but what might help the most is a referral to
someone who can come diagnose/fix this problem - and I expect to pay them.

I am between Van Dorn and Telegraph just outside the beltway in Fairfax
County.
