[Novalug] problem with power state change on laptop

OK, I know this thread went a little out of control......

But getting back to the problem it started with -

my laptop blows up (sometimes seems to be an acpi related kernel panic
judging from the death cry)

(I had temporarily found that using an old kernel resolved it, but yum
update blew that old kernel away -

so I have done a little more experimenting and found that if I set the
machine to boot to runlevel 3, there is no problem - even when I run X etc
via 'startx' and plug/unplug while in X. I have sound, wifi, NetworkManager
etc going fine.

So I thought it might be a service that is started in 4 or 5 but not three -
chkconfig --list only revealed a "readahead_later", which I started - still
no problem.

So can someone tell me, what is going on at runlevel 5 that is not going on
at runlevel 3? 9besides gdm) For the time being I will be happy to work at 3
and run startx.

Any ideas?
