[Novalug] join 2 half pages into one

That gs command did not do what I had hoped for.

I have two pdf files, each with a 8.5" x 5.5" single page.  I would
like them merged into a 8.5" x 11" single page (i.e. side by side
in landscape orientation of letter size paper.

Indeed the gs command above does merge them into a single document,
but each source document is centered on a separate letter sized page.
