Obviously you didn't understand my point.
First off, Ubuntu has no marketing budget. It's all word-of-mouth. It's not the
first, it's not the only one. Furthermore, it's still marketed as "Ubuntu" instead as
"Linux." So you only proved my point there. ;)
Secondly, it hasn't done any wonders for the bottom line of Canonical. Because,
if you really want to go there, as too many over-zealous people do, it's really sad
that people aren't financially helping Canonical. So that only further proved my
point.
Because -- and this is very much my point -- it's only with actual, financial
expenditures and support that Canonical can fund more GPL and further Linux
developments. Too many people "go there" without realizing, percentage-wise,
it's not very positive for Canonical.
And that's just sad. Even sadder is when I point something out like this, people
think I'm anti-Ubuntu or anti-Canonical. No, I'm anti-bigot and anti-fanboy, when
a company is losing money and, correspondingly, they cannot fund GPL
developments as much as they want to.
And, again, there is _no_ commercial Linux marketing. Even when there is little
expenditure for such ...
A) It takes away from GPL funding, and
B) It is still marketed as a "brand name," not "Linux"
Sorry, but you just re-emphasized all of my points with this post. ;)

One word, yo.
Unbuntu.
They've marketed far and wide, came up fast and large, and gained lots of
following.
