You remember correctly. The quote turns it into an atom, which is not a
list.
I realized that shortly after I hit the send key.
However, I believe that your two expressions are different. The fist
looks at the symbol value, while the latter calls novalug as a function
and tests the value it returns. And (listp '(novalug)) should do the trick.
