[Novalug] DOS options -- WAS: Device naming.

Didn't know PC-DOS was still available. Did IBM make the binaries
freely available (even if only free beer)?

I had a lot of hope for DR-DOS both with Caldera and then afterwards
with DeviceLogics. Too bad both f'd-up. I ran DR-DOS since version
5 and it was still solid through 7.x, with just a few nuances. DR-DOS
basically wrote the book on good task switching with DPMI and then
introduced DPMS. I was still running it under DOSEmu for clients as
late as 2003. Today I just use DOSBox or my _legal_, open source
copy of Caldera OpenDOS 7.02 (aka DR-DOS 7.02).

I had enough issues with little FreeDOS details that I had to steer clear
of it. I know they addressed the redirector and other things, but I still
saw things break whereas DR-DOS was flawless. I haven't checked it
out lately though.

Do not need floppies - there exists an installable version of
PCDOS 2000 on cd.

Otherwise he can download and burn the FreeDOS cd.
Opensource and free. http://www.freedos.org/
Advantages of the PCDOS and Freedos over MSDOS - they have the date
problem fixed :-)
