Jay,

I did almost exactly that a few months back.

I went to MicroCenter (Rockville) and got:

[1] an AMD Athlon II X4 635 for $100
[2] a Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H Socket AM3 880G mATX Motherboard $100
[3] two 2G DDR-3 Crucial Memory sticks -- about $100
[4] a PowerSupply for about $40

AMD seems to have a running deal where they will give you $40 off a Gigabyte Motherboard.
The particular PSU and Memory were recommended by the Salesman, he pointer out what was on sale.

My total was $327. The $340 listed above minus the $40 discount + Tax (6% MD on $300 would be $18) and $9 for "I Can't Remember".

I bought a mATX cuz that's what size the case I was filling, but full ATX shouldn't cost much extra, and you can use a mATX if you like.

The AMD has the VT bit, so you can run a Windows Guest under Linux. It's a 64 bit.

Subject: [Novalug] MB, CPU, RAM, and PSU recommendation

Looking to upgrade one of my PCs, Currently running an ATX sized MB.

I want to replace all four items above.

PSU must be 350-400W, and very quiet.

Projected budget is $375-425.

Any suggestions?

Jay
