Second the Mintyboost kit (I built 2). It's an easy beginner's kit, and
fully illustrated step-by-step instructions are on line. Recharges anything
designed for USB-style charging (may be some issues with iPhones that are
easily addressed). If you are unsure which end of a soldering iron you hold
(hint - it's the NOT HOT end where the cord comes off), there are numerous
commercial versions of the same idea available at your local brick & mortar
store and the usual online outlets.
