[Novalug] Ubuntu desktops and 11.10

Right now I have Ubuntu 10.10 on the computer.
I have always used Ubuntu with Gnome. But the reading I have done about
the changes made in Ubuntu with the 11.10 upgrade have suggested to me
that I will find a difficulty in my work stream with the more Windows like
Gnome upgrade partially because this is an older machine with limited
cpu space and limited memory.
I had been experiencing a lot of lock ups recently in the gnome
desktop so I installed XFCE desktop over the weekend and today I
have been using it all day. So far not a single lock up - even when I am
using Firefox and the cpu ap is showing the cpu running less than
50% as opposed to the 100% I was getting with Gnome.
There are some things I have not yet figured out how to do with XFCE,
mostly having to do with layout of menus and panels (how do I get a
panel to default to the top of the screen rather than the bottom
for example, can I get the application menu to look more like the
gnome application menu?).
Does anyone on the list use XFCE desktop and have time to discuss it?
