Just wanted to send an update.  Once I got network connectivity, I ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade.  The install finished correctly and all works now.

Thanks for the replies, not sure if everyone understood what I was looking for, but here are the commands I typed to get myself back online:

sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.204
sudo ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0
sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.1
[edit /etc/resolv.conf], add "nameserver 192.168.0.1"

These are the minimum commands to set a fixed IP address, set a route to the gateway, and use the gateway as the DNS server.

Now that this is done, I will try running an update to see if it fixes itself..

Igor

I ran the 11.10 upgrade and something went wonky.  It won't boot to the gui and I have no network.

I can start the GUI by going to the console and typing startx.

But, I can't figure out how to reconfigure the networking.   11.10 has this very dumbed down network manager, it has a slider for network on or off.  I slide it to on and nothing happens.

I want to use commandline tools to start the networking, but I am not sure which ones..

I tried sudo ifup eth0 but get an error message - Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.  I can run sudo restart networking, but nothing seems to happen.

I could at least give myself a fixed IP address, but don't know how.

Can anyone tell me where I can find documentation of how to manually configure networking in 11.10?  If I can get the network up I can try to re-run the upgrade, but until them I am stuck..

Thanks,
Igor
