It could also be that you have a name server that always returns an answer
(like if you have FIOS and get redirected to a stupid FIOS web page when
you mistype a domain name instead of getting a NXDOMAIN response), so the
installer believes that every name is taken...

Might you, or someone have used the name in the past such that
it is still being cached by dhcp, dns, or ???
