You can grep Maildirs - each message is just a text file.

In my experience, it's been faster because the RAID underlying the
mail server can feed individual files to the IMAP daemon much faster
than the daemon can scroll through a multi-gigabyte mbox file.
(My mail archive sounds about as bad as yours - 5-6GB total on a good
week.)
