Plus, you can always move the existing system out of the way during
reinstall. During the reinstall, hit ALT-F2 to get to the shell window.
Assuming your system is on sda1, do something like this:
mkdir /a; mount /dev/sda1 /a; cd /a; mkdir .0; mv * .0; mv.0/*+* .; cd
/; umount /a
Before you go into the Disk Selection mode. Choose "Custom Layout", and
reinstall the new system into sda1, but DO NOT FORMAT the partition.
