I have an older system with a GB of memory and a 2003 athlon cpu. A
while ago as Ubuntu moved to Maverick I started getting crashes (they
would consist of a freeze up and then a kernal panic - - you know
where the two lights on the upper right of the keyboard start
flashing) were mostly after I opened Firefox. I finally decided it might
be not enough memory. So I removed the gnome desktop and installed
xfce. Things are much better now although I still get the occasional
freeze up from some web pages that I think are running large scripts
or music or whatever. (I do not have speakers hooked up to this computer
so music is inaudable).

It took me a little while to tweak XFCE to the way I liked but I am
happy with it now.

In the future I will install UbuntuStudio since it is going to be
using XFCE as the desktop application.
